Hi guys, I'm seriously considering switching my drag truck over to e-85 and I have a carb question for you. Right now the truck runs 11.6x, 355 11.6 cr, Holley 750 dual feed double pump. Fuel pump is a QFT 175, braided 8an fuel lines no paper filters. I plan on running this season with the motor that's in it but at the end of the season I'm going to build a 421 SBC to get the truck down into tha 10.1x range. My question is on the carb, do you think I could buy a carb now that would work on this engine for this year and then be able to use on the bigger motor next year? If so suggest some carb sizes you think may fit this bill, or state why this whole idea won't work. Thanks guys.
Dan

you have a couple of options, you could just send your carb to Justus and have him convert it for now and be on E-85 this year and at the end of year sell it and get a bigger carb for the bigger engine, or just call him and see if he has a bigger carb that he can tune down for your engine and when you get the bigger engine done then turn it back up, easy peesy and welcome

Thanks butter bean, I've been in contact with Justus and option 2 is going to work out real well.

bean got a question 4 u. when you first changed over to e85 did you chase the tune while the motor cleaned itself. I had that happen, between the lines cleaning out and the piston tops cleaning off. The motort only ran 1 1/2 seasons on 110 leaded b4 change over? Just curious. Been on E85 for 6 seasons now. TY

big daddy that's almost the same situation I'm going to be in too, so I'll be looking forward to this answer as well. I'm trying to figure out what plugs to start off with, I'm thinking AR 3935, and leaving my total timing where its at 36*

I have 3934's in my heap and they seen to be fine, just get it running with the same plugs first and then change them, when you pull them out they will look new LOL!!!

Ok guys I have everything all set with the new carb from Justus and I have a question. What are you guys doing as far as venting your fuel cell? Is it a big concern drawing moisture in thru the vent line or no, I have an 8an set up for my vent line now. Is anybody running any kind of check valve in the vent to keep moisture from getting into the cell? We're taking the truck out for some test and tune on Saturday, I'm really looking forward to see what it's going to do.

Hey s10. You should be fine as is. You should only need to cap the vent if you're not going to run it for a good while. If you start it every week or 2 to keep fuel in carb, that will help. Letting the fuel evaporate out of the carb seems to cause the biggest problem in my experience with this fuel.

Excellent, thanks. I always run it at least a couple times a week so I should be good. Thanks again.

I put a shut of valve on my 8an vent line and I started shutting it off when I bring the car home and put it away for the week or what ever. It only cost about $9 bux to do it but I was getting alot of evaporation during the week if it sat without the vent shut off I just have to remember to open it up before I fire it up to go out for the weekend but its working out great.!!!

I like the idea of the shut off valve, I've just been capping the vent line when I park it in the garage which is working fine. I got the truck out about a week ago to the track and it ran real strong with the new carb from Justus and switching over to the E85. There was no traction at the track and my 60ft times were off by .3 from last year but I picked up about 3 mph pretty consistent too 11.84 11.85 11.88. I'll be running in a bracket race this Sunday, it's a warm up before the points season begins and the track is well prepped now so I'm going to get a great idea of what differences there will be from last year. I'm in Michigan here and I just picked up 10 gallons, they still aren't quite to the summer percentage yet. The lady at the gas station showed me the last 2 delivery sheets and they were both 80%, I got the fuel home and tested it and it tested right at 80% so it's nice to find a station that I can count on. I'll post up how it runs after Sunday.

you may want to take out 2 jet sizes with it only being 80% but you lost 60' times due to the extra TQ that E-85 makes, you will see this weekend when the track is prepped rite!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure I lost the 60ft times to mostly tire spin it was ridiculous, they hadn't prepped the track at all, and I don't blame them it was their opening day and there were a ton of street tire cars out there that would have just tore up the prep anyways. But yes I'll deal with the jetting when I can get some good traction and see where it all shakes out. I never realized the TQ difference, the truck pulls noticeably stronger than it did on race gas.

s10 gramps I put my 355 on e-85 last season and it loved it. I picked up a quick fuel e85 carb and it is a touch fat but it liked it. The only thing I fight with is my oil looks like I have a blown head gasket, but its e-85....so I'm doing something wrong and I cant figure it out yet. If you guys have any ideas my ears are open.

1- its too FAT if your oil looks like that lean it out a little, 2- it could be a breather problem, make sure its breathing ok, like PCV or header e-vac or Vacuum pump 3- if this fails then run a leak down test and see whats getting by the rings, good luck.
