Great info on this site! I have a SBC turbocharged mustang and am having some winter blend blues (I think). The car is stupid rich and doesn't want to come up on boost on the transbrake. I searched and saw the beaker method to test blend, but wanted to see if anyone knows of a resonable priced electronic fuel tester?
Also, does anyone in NC know where E98 can be bought by the barrels? I've had no luck! Thanks, John

A water test kit like Heath carries is probably the most reasonable and sensible system for testing. The electronic gizmos are nice but can get pricey....to give you the same results!! To insure repeatable, consistent results just make sure you use the same amount of fuel, water and where you read each level at (meniscus). Carlos

Here in NW Iowa, this time a year all that is available is either a 70% or 75% blend. I needed to get my motor on the dyno this weekend and couldn't find a true E85 blend any where close. I have a buddy that hooked me up with a guy that is a lab tech at an Ethanol plant near by. He told me to by E85 fuel from the Corner station and stop over at the plant and get me taken care of. Believe it or not...he used the exact same water test to check it. I was expecting him to use a high dollar machine that would give a reading in seconds. He said this was the only test method avaialble to him for checking mix rates. Anyway, we tested and determined the blend I purchased was at 75%...He added 2 gallons of pure 200 proof to 3 gallons of E75 which after the final testing came out to 84.5%...Hopefully with the coming warm weather E85 will be readily available at the stations.

I can hook you up blazingfast. Fifteen bucks plus shipping which usually runs about $6 is cheap if it saves your motor and it will eventually.

The deal with the winter blend is that you have to find an outlet for E98 or Straight 200 proof Ethanhol. The ethanol plants around here are not willing to part with it for some reason. I had to pull some serious strings and about 2 days of calling around to get some. What a pain!!! Winter SUCKS!!!...true E85 around here will not come out until sometime in April.

I'll send some money. The problem I had was I have buildt a twin turbo Gen III LQ4 Chevrolet with a E85 blowthru carb. I had bought fuel for it back during the summer and had been tuning with that fuel. With that fuel I could idle in the shop for 15 mins before hitting 220. Now keep in mind I had only 1 gal of water in a no radiator system. Before I took the car out to test I decided to buy some fresh fuel and install a small ATV radiator. Then after installing the radiator and putting new fuel in the car would only idle for 3-5 mins. After rechecking everything I made a list of what could cause the heat issue and thats when I remembered reading about winterblend. I put some old fuel in it heat problem gone. Could have been BAD!!! stopped by the local station and ask what blend was in the tank they said they had winterblend.

The tester is very easy to use. Got mine last week and was testing fuel on Saturday. Funny thing all of the stations around here were supposed to have winter blend but all tested at 85%. I was happy with it. I will taking a drum to fill it up.
