I was gonna unload my car out of the trailer last night to do some work on it but I could not get it started. I ended up pushing it out. It was in the mid to upper 40's. I thought I had it flooded at one point ....there was fuel pooled in the bottom of the intake. After doing some odds and ends, I tried to start it again later. It was sputtering like it was trying to run but just would not fire. Tried again a few minutes later and it did basically the same thing. This time I just pumped the hell out of the throttle (15-20 times) while I was cranking it over and it finally started.
Does this seem "normal"?? This was only the second day I have started it on E85 so I have no idea what is "normal". The first day I had it running it was about 70° and it started with only a couple of pumps of fuel. Does it normally take a whole lot more fuel to get an engine to fire with E85 when it's cooler? Hoping you all that have been running it a while can give me an idea of what to expect.

I would be looking at carb issues like stuck accelerator pump or needle and seat issues.

David what you have to do is pack up all your stuff and move south where it's warm then your car will start all the time ;D just kidding. This is certainly an issues and it is one we are working on. For now what seems to work well is just pouring a little good 'ol gasoline down the hatch to bust it off. This is only on the first cold start up in temps. that are 40 and below. We just spray a little carb cleaner in it and bust it off. Once you get a little heat in the motor it will fire up like it use to. We are toying with some things to fix this problem and should have something ironed out soon, or the weather will just warm up and we won't have to worry about it, which ever comes first, ha. I can tell you that if you don't get it lit fairly early it will drown the plugs and then you'll never get it started.

OK thanks Heath. I knew it would be different(than gas) but I didn't know it would be THAT different. Hopefully it will be warming up and staying warm here in a couple of weeks. I'd move if I could. I hate winter. Southern Missouri is cold enough. I dunno how folks up north deal with it. I'd go absolutely freakin' NUTS!!

just for reference my gas race carbs did the same thing i think the stuff in the bowls goes sour and wont light off fouling the mix. i would drain the bowls and fill her with fresh gas and it will fire in 20 deg. weather! with the old stuff in it was like the lawn mower s first start up!!! i bet fresh fuel would help or squirt them through the vents with gas so the firts pump shot was gas!
i primed my injection with e-85 not normal gas in the 45 deg. garage and it lit off fine !!! and it takes 3 times as long to gas me out now over methanol and the formaldehyde fumes!!

It was cold here (30 degrees) a couple weeks ago and we needed to test some carbs so we just used a standard everyday hair dryer and warmed the carb and intake manifold for about 10 minutes and there were no hard starting issues at all.

Race fuel will do the same thing if i gets cold out. I raced snowmobiles for a long time and we would have to spray wd40 in the carbs to get them to fireup. Bu then again it was -30 out side. But i would think if you just primed the car with regular gas it would fire up.

David7355, I have the same problem, I put a gas primer system on mine, via a No2 valve three shots fires right up. Mine hates cold weather period done all kinds of stuff to get it to start cold and it just won't do it, must be a FORD thing.

It ain't a Ford thing, it's an Ethanol thing. ;D
I got a cheap plastic bottle to use to prime it with gas but it's been warn enough that I have not had to use it. Almost 80° today...it fired right up, no problem.
