I have a 15:1 434 SBC that na and currently running carbed Methanol. Like everyone else, I ma wanting to jump on the wagon and switch to E85. From all the research I have done and seen, on paper E85 should be fine with up to approx. 16:1.
My question is, are there many real world people that are running E85 straight from the pump in a motor with upwards around 15:1 compression? This is a street / strip car and I'd like to be able to run pump gas when cruising and car shows.
Another side question. What if any, is a good way to raise the octane in the E85 to safely support higher compressions? I know that some racers mix their own blend, but can I add any of the following to do this ( race gas, ethanol, booster, ect)?
Great site and thanks for any help someone may have. I will for sure be using someone form here for a kit or complete carb E85 switch.

alot of people are running major boost with it and no intercooler. . i'm inching my way from methanol injection at 14.7-1 now . i figure a loss in tq. and a quick warm up will save me alot of $$$ as with the whole extra milage. just the fact that turbo guys are hitting 28pounds + had me convinced . if you need to raise the octane you could mix your own e 85 with vp 118 and ethanol . mtbe ,lead and tolulene are going to be a hazzard to you ..... now you hmmmmmm could hmmmmm add ummmmmmm a little nitro at 2%

Welcome to the board Mark aka importeater. If it's real world you want than it's real world you got. There is a link on the bottom of my site to a group called the Carolina Gassers www.carolinagassers.com. The 2008 Grand Champion's name is Joe Smith. He has the white '62 Belair with almost 600 ci of bbc at 15.5:1 na on E85. He runs twin Quick Fuel doms and I saw him go three 5.51s in a row last year. This is straight out of the pump E85 that we all run here. It always measures out good, 85% or better but it's the cheap stuff. The way I see it if your going to get all fancy and mix your own fuel why mess with E85. Go for something with some real pop like adamvega was talking about. But if you want a real bang for the buck then pump grade E85 can't be beat. We have spun our blower as hard as we dare with the relatively simple and cheap bottom end we have in our motor and it just keeps making more power. Our boost timing retard might have something to do with keeping it in the safety zone but I feel like we could push this thing way past the limit of everything else in the engine long before we hit the limit of the E85.

Now thats what I'm talking about. I new there had to be some others out there that have been doing it with no issues. But's it's nice to actually hear of someone doing it, and me wondering if I'm making the right choice on trying it.
I too am for the using cheap pump gas. Heck, if your going to go thru all the trouble of mixing it you'd be just as well off to stay with Methanol. Great info and thanks for all the input. Great site for those of use who are wanting to make the switch but aren't really 100% confident.
