I dynoed my 383 sbc with a quickfuel 750 dp.I brought the engine home.It was on engine stand a month or so in climate controlled shop. When I went to charge # 1 cyl with air to change valve springs,it leaked badly past the ex valve with rockers off.I pulled the heads (new afr elmiminator series),the seats had surface rust on them. I attribute this to the alchohol drying out the steel and drawing moisture. I cleaned everthing up and relapped the valves by hand and they are ok.HOW is the best way to keep this from happening on my not daily driven street/drag car? Much money in this car/engine.Do I plumb in a 1 gallon cell with a tank switch from a pickup truck, fill 1 gal cell with regular gasoline, and switch to gas just before parking car for a week or so.You know, let it idle on gasoline till engine runs fat then shut off thus letting gas with upper end lube mix,run through fuel pump, lines, carb, valves etc. I hope I have explained my theory so you can pick up what I am puttin down. Any help would be appreciated! Also what type of fuel cell, lines, fittings, fuel pump, etc to I need for this 600 hp sbc?

I don't know about "guru" . I assume you dynoed this engine on E85 and not methanol right? Anyway since we hardly ever let ours sit for a month I suppose what you have described could happen. The solution you proposed sounds like it will do the trick to me. Or you could just fire it up every couple weeks to keep things moving. To feed 600 hp I would use at least a 250 gph pump plumbed with a -12 in -10 out and out each side of the reg with -8 to each float bowl. Make sure your filter is rated to flow at least what your pump is rated to pump.

Thanks for the info Heath. Do you run any top end lube on a regular basis? Should e-85 be allowed to sit in my Quickfuel e-85 carb? I guess what I am asking is how to maintain this car.I have a million questions but do not want to take up to much of your time.I have alot invested and want to maintain fuel system/engine etc. in top form. Yes, car was dynoed on e-85. Dyno sheets read 570 ft.lbs @ 4800,574hp@6300 We will see what the time slips say with this 2700lb.X-Gasser.... I would send ya some pics if I ya want. Thanks again! They call me Redline Racer P.S. I don't believe those torque numbers,hp should be close though, according to Tony Mamo,he saw the sheets...

Redline, sorry I forgot to welcome you to the board the first time so welcome to the board. No problem with the questions, that's why I built this site. Don't under estimate the torque of E85. That's where you get the power from. I wouldn't be surprised if those numbers are correct. How much tuning did you do on the QF carb from the way you got it out of the box? We don't use any top lube or anything and we leave the fuel in it all the time but we do start our car every couple weeks if it sits just to keep everything moving. I would love to see pictures. As you know we have the Henry J which is my father's car and I am currently building a '48 Anglia with a blown/injected 355 on E85 of course with hopes of running the 5.30 index class.

Thanks Heath! I jetted up to I believe 88 front and 90 rear, off the top of my head, will confirm.I jetted up til I lost power. As the motor only pulled til 6300,I am changing cams and valve springs.I will fill you in later as I must get to work. I will send pics to your personal e-mail. Thanks for the help! RR

When I let motors with mechanical cams sit, I bring #1 to TDC and back off the compressed springs. I learned this trick when I friend of mine had seats rust when using VP race gas. It is a bit of a pain, but the seats won't rust when closed.

the best thing to do is get a can of wd-40 ,drain the bowls with lower screws ,fill it with gasthrogh the vents ,turn it over till it starts and shut down ,fog the carb while ya crank it with ignition off for 3-5 sec. . this will keep for as long as ya need .we did this with methanol carbs for yrs till we went injection .no boogers or blocked pass. or water/rust problems .
