I am planning an engine build for a sbc 400 with Dart Iron Eagle heads. This will be a street/strip car in the 500-525 hp range. Just wondering with a 105 octane rating what would be a safe compression ratio to run? Thank You.

oldszooks welcome and thanks for your question. As you know you can run E85 in high and low compression engines I just wasn't sure how high until I saw it with my own eyes on Oct. 18th at one of our local tracks. A man was there named Joe Smith running mid 5s in a '62 Chevy with a big block and two dominators on E85 straight out of the pump from the local station. He said he was running 15.5:1 compression with no problems. I knew it worked good with 12.5:1 but 15.5:1 WOW! I'm not saying you should build your motor with that much compression, especially for a street/strip car but if you are going to run E85 exclusively than I would build it up to take advantage of the high octane and alcohol base of the fuel. Why waste it's power potential by burning it in a pump gasoline compression engine? Thanks again for writing in and keep us posted on the build.
